This is one of the most underused features in ChatGPT. Memory allows the AI to retain key facts about you across different conversations β your name, preferences, coding style, job role, and more.
"Remember that I'm a Node.js developer who prefers TypeScript"
Settings β Personalization β Memory to see everything
ChatGPT remembersMemory is especially powerful for developers, writers, and business professionals who interact with ChatGPT daily. Instead of repeating context every session, it just knows your preferences.
Custom Instructions let you define two things that apply to every single conversation without you having to repeat them:
Tell it your role, expertise, tech stack, industry, language preferences, and any context it should always have. Example: "I'm a full-stack developer at a SaaS startup. I use React, Node.js, and PostgreSQL. I prefer concise answers with code examples."
Define output format, tone, and style. Example: "Use bullet points. Skip disclaimers. Always include working code. Use TypeScript types. Keep explanations under 3 sentences unless I ask for detail."
Navigate to Settings β Personalization β Custom Instructions to
set these up. They persist across all new conversations.
Need to ask something sensitive without it being saved to your history or used for model training? Temporary Chat is ChatGPT's built-in incognito mode.
This is especially useful for confidential business queries, personal questions, or anything you don't want lingering in your account history.
Most users think of ChatGPT as a simple chat window. But Canvas transforms it into a full collaborative editing environment β similar to Google Docs or VS Code, right inside the chat.
Activate Canvas by typing /canvas
in the message input, or it opens automatically when ChatGPT detects a writing or coding task.
This is a genuinely hidden gem. In any conversation, type @ to

GPTs without leaving your current chat.

Most users don't realize that ChatGPT supports conversation branching. If you hover over any of your previous messages, you'll see a small edit (pencil) icon. Clicking it lets you:
This is incredibly powerful for A/B testing prompts, exploring different approaches, or recovering from a response that went in the wrong direction β without starting over.
ChatGPT lets you download your entire conversation history as a structured dataset. Go to Settings β Data Controls β Export Data. Within minutes, you'll
receive an email with a ZIP file containing:
conversations.json formatAdvanced Voice Mode (available on Plus and Pro plans) is far more than basic speech-to-text. It's a real-time, natural voice conversation where ChatGPT can:
Interrupt mid-sentence, change topics naturally, and get real-time responses with emotional nuance
Share your camera or screen during voice conversations for visual context and real-time troubleshooting
Speak in one language and get responses in another β perfect for language learning and translation
ChatGPT can now search the live web and provide sourced, cited answers. Instead of relying on its training data cutoff, it fetches real-time information from the internet.
